HerStory | Dr. Meredith Calvert — Finding Wild Calm in the Chaos
NEUROSCIENTIST, YOGA + BREATHWORK Instructor

Dr. Meredith
I wear a few different hats: neuroscientist, yoga and breathwork instructor, retreat leader, and mom to two incredible daughters but at the heart of it all, my mission is simple: I help overextended humans find calm and joy, both in their bodies and out in the wild.
My path to this work began in a fluorescent-lit lab while earning my Ph.D. in cellular and molecular biology. The stress was relentless. I was anxious, sleepless, and constantly unwell. A friend opening a new Bikram yoga studio invited me to take a class. I went reluctantly, skeptical that ninety minutes in a hot room would change anything and by the time I left, drenched and oddly peaceful, I realized something profound had shifted. That night I slept deeply for the first time in years and I knew I’d found something life-changing.
More than twenty years later, yoga remains my anchor. Through MeriYoga and WildCalm Retreats, I guide others to that same intersection of mindful movement, breath, and nature that helped me heal. Whether I’m teaching in an East Bay studio, leading a mountain hike, or floating above a coral reef, my work is all about helping people reconnect: to the quiet wisdom of their own bodies and to the awe and wonder of the natural world. My background in neuroscience weaves through everything I teach: how mindful movement regulates the nervous system, how breathwork calms the brain, and how small, consistent shifts can create profound physiological change, offering us the resilience to meet life’s transitions with steadiness and grace.
My journey hasn’t been without challenges. I grew up in a chaotic household and lost my mother to alcoholism before my daughters were born. Those experiences shaped my deep desire to create stability, compassion, and joy within my own family. They also taught me the importance of self-regulation and finding peace in the storm. My husband Alex has been my steady ground through it all. We met when we were nineteen, and his unwavering belief in me has allowed every adventure, every leap, and every dream to take root.
Professionally, one of my proudest milestones has been bringing SeaCalm Retreats to life; combining yoga, scuba diving, and mindfulness into a single, transformative experience. What began as a dream more than a decade ago has blossomed into something magical, now expanding into its third year and a second location.

“Treat your body like a dear old friend and a precious resource. ”
Looking ahead, I’m expanding my work to focus more on supporting women through the powerful transition of perimenopause: bridging science, self-compassion, and embodied practice to help them feel grounded, vibrant, and seen. Alongside this, I’m continuing to grow my yoga and retreat offerings and to expand the reach of my new podcast, Calm With Me, where I share science-based tools for cultivating calm, joy, and nervous system balance in everyday life. My hope is to build a supportive, curious community that extends far beyond the studio walls.
These days, self-care looks simple but sacred: walking outside daily, getting good sleep when I can, and celebrating life through laughter, shared meals, and meaningful connection. My guiding mantra comes from the Sanskrit: Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu, “May all beings everywhere be happy and free.”
“menopause isn’t an ending but a transition into deeper wisdom, power, and grace.”
If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: Treat your body like a dear old friend and a precious resource.
To the Sis Circle community: if you’ve ever felt called to try scuba diving, to travel somewhere wild, or simply to reconnect with your own breath and body, but fear or overwhelm have held you back, I’d love to help you discover that calm and courage can coexist. Join me on retreat, or tune into the podcast. Every conversation, follow, and connection helps this community of calm and curiosity grow a little wider.

Sis Circle’s Closing Reflection
Dr. Meredith Calvert reminds us that science and spirit don’t have to live in separate worlds, they can breathe together. Through her story, we’re reminded that menopause isn’t an ending but a transition into deeper wisdom, power, and grace. Meredith helps us understand what’s happening in our bodies and how to meet it with calm curiosity instead of fear.
At Sis Circle, we believe in creating space for these conversations—where knowledge becomes empowerment and sisterhood becomes medicine. As we move through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond, may we all find our own “wild calm” and remember that we’re not navigating this alone.
