HerStory | Nirel the Yogini: Rest to Be Your Best
In a world that glorifies hustle, I chose stillness. Where exhaustion was expected, I found healing in rest. This is my story, a journey of honoring my ancestors’ sacrifices, reclaiming my wholeness, and helping others discover the power of pause.
Restorative Yoga-based Offerings and Events

Nirel
Hello, I’m Nirel Salazar, a second-generation Filipino-American wellness entrepreneur, yoga teacher, and rest advocate based in the San Francisco Bay Area. My work centers on Restorative Yoga, weaving together stillness, breath, sound healing, and cultural practices to create spaces where people can pause, release, and reconnect with themselves.
This calling didn’t come from ease, it grew out of burnout and depression. At one point, I realized the way I was living; always hustling, always performing and it was not sustainable. Wellness, I learned, isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about caring for the mind, body, and spirit in ways that honor all of who we are.
Yoga became my lifeline. I started at a low point, carrying not only personal struggles but also the weight of being a second-generation daughter of immigrants. That intersection shaped my journey and eventually, my mission. Because I knew I wasn’t the only one. If my healing could help others facing similar struggles, then it was something worth sharing.

“Rest isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.”
My family inspires me most, especially the older generation. Hearing their stories of hardship in the Philippines and their fight to start over in the United States gave me perspective. They worked tirelessly but they were always exhausted. At some point I had to ask: Is this what I’m destined for too? To grind endlessly and call it success? The answer was no. I wanted to honor their sacrifices without inheriting only their exhaustion. That realization became a turning point. I began to redefine success not in financial terms alone, but through balance, rest, and wholeness.
I’ve also been influenced by people who challenge the culture of overwork. Tricia Hersey of The Nap Ministry reframes rest as radical empowerment. Simone Biles showed the world that choosing mental health, even at the peak of success, is an act of strength. These reminders affirm what I know to be true: rest is powerful, restorative, and deeply human.
One of my proudest milestones has been stepping into wellness full-time. Moving from part-time teaching to building a sustainable business around something I love felt both terrifying and liberating. To dedicate my time to this work and watch it sustain itself remains to be one of my greatest victories.
Of course, there were challenges. As a Filipino-American in a wellness industry that doesn’t often reflect people like me, I sometimes felt invisible. Getting my name out there was daunting. What carried me through was community, leaning on connections, building relationships, and showing up authentically. That community became the soil where my work could grow.
If there’s one lesson I carry, it’s this: listen to your body and pursue your dreams in ways that are sustainable. Passion is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. What keeps you moving isn’t speed, but rhythm, care, and rest along the way.
For me, that looks like daily practices of self-care and celebration, meditation, rest, movement, time in community, and quiet moments of inspiration. Even simply giving myself permission to pause. These are the ways I refill my cup so I can keep showing up with love.

If I could speak to my younger self, I’d tell her:
You are strong. Trust your intuition. You are never alone. The universe and your ancestors are cheering you on every step of the way.
Today, I’m excited for what’s ahead. I’m building a training program to support the next generation of space holders, yoga teachers, and wellness entrepreneurs. My vision is to create a culturally aware curriculum that equips leaders with the confidence and care to guide others. I want this program to reach across the United States, growing a network of empowered, thoughtful leaders in wellness who can ripple this work outward.
“You are never alone. The universe and your ancestors are cheering you on.”
My journey began in burnout, but it led me to balance. And what I know for sure is this: when we rest, we thrive.
Rest to be your best.

Closing Reflection
Nirel’s story reminds us that healing isn’t only personal, it’s collective. By choosing rest over relentless hustle, she honors the sacrifices of those who came before her while charting a new path for those who will follow. Her journey reflects the essence of HerStory: women redefining success, lifting one another up, and proving that thriving doesn’t have to come at the cost of our well-being.
